When Loved Ones are in IOP/PHP/RTC

When someone you love enters an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), or Residential Treatment Center (RTC), the entire family can be affected. Although your loved one is receiving intensive care, family members may also need a safe place to process their own emotions, learn new skills, and prepare for the changes ahead.

The providers at Inner Peace Counseling of Utah can offer individual, couples, or family counseling to help spouses, parents, siblings, and other loved ones navigate this difficult time. Therapy can provide support for feelings such as fear, guilt, grief, anger, exhaustion, confusion, or uncertainty. It can also help family members recognize what is within their control and develop healthier ways to respond to stressful situations.

Our providers can help parnets and families:

• Understand mental health symptoms and the treatment process

• Develop healthy communication and conflict-management skills

• Establish appropriate boundaries without withdrawing support

• Reduce patterns of rescuing, enabling, blaming, or overfunctioning

• Manage caregiver stress and protect their own emotional well-being

• Prepare for family meetings, home visits, discharge, and reunification

• Create a supportive home environment that encourages continued recovery

With written permission, our providers may also coordinate with your loved one’s treatment team when clinically appropriate. This can help everyone understand their respective roles and support a more consistent transition home. However, outpatient counseling for family members does not replace the services or recommendations provided by the IOP, PHP, or residential program.

You do not have to wait until your loved one completes treatment to receive support. Caring for yourself and strengthening family relationships can be an important part of the healing process.
