School

The transition back to school can bring a mix of excitement, anticipation, and stress. New teachers, changing routines, increased academic expectations, shifting friendships, and unfamiliar social environments can feel overwhelming for many children and adolescents.

Some students adjust quickly, while others may experience anxiety, irritability, difficulty sleeping, stomachaches, emotional outbursts, school refusal, or a noticeable drop in confidence. Children may struggle to explain what is bothering them, and teenagers may withdraw, become more reactive, or insist that everything is fine even when they are having a difficult time.

School-related challenges can include:

  • Anxiety about grades, tests, or classroom participation

  • Difficulty making or maintaining friendships

  • Bullying, exclusion, or peer conflict

  • Problems with attention, organization, or motivation

  • Emotional regulation and behavioral concerns

  • Learning differences or pressure to keep up academically

  • Adjusting to a new school, grade, or schedule

  • Balancing school, activities, family expectations, and social demands

  • Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan

Therapy can provide children and teens with a supportive place to talk about what they are experiencing and develop practical skills for navigating the school environment. Our providers can help a student recognize emotional triggers, manage anxiety, improve communication, strengthen confidence, and build coping strategies for stressful situations.

Therapy can also support parents in understanding what may be contributing to their child’s behavior. Families can learn how to respond to school-related stress, create more effective routines, improve communication at home, and determine when additional support from teachers or school personnel may be helpful.

Children and teens do not have to wait until a problem becomes severe to begin therapy. Early support can make school transitions feel more manageable and help students develop skills they can use throughout the school year and beyond.

Inner Peace Counseling of Utah provides counseling for children, adolescents, and families at our Draper and Saratoga Springs locations, with telehealth appointments available throughout Utah.

Inner Peace Counseling of Utah has providers who currently work, or have previously worked, within school systems. Their experience gives them valuable insight into the academic, behavioral, emotional, and social pressures students face each day. They understand how schools operate and can help families navigate concerns involving classroom expectations, peer relationships, school avoidance, accommodations, and communication with educational teams.
