Telehealth Or Remote Counseling

Getting help should not require adding more stress to your life. Work schedules, family responsibilities, health concerns, transportation, distance, and Utah weather can sometimes make it difficult to attend counseling in person.

Online therapy offers a convenient way to receive professional mental health support from a private and comfortable location. Through secure video appointments, you can meet with your therapist, discuss your concerns, develop coping skills, and work toward meaningful goals without traveling to an office.

At Inner Peace Counseling of Utah, we provide compassionate, individualized telehealth counseling within the framework of each client’s values. Virtual appointments are available for children, teenagers, adults, couples, and families located throughout Utah when telehealth is clinically appropriate.

What Is Telehealth Or Remote Counseling?

Telehealth counseling—also called online therapy, virtual counseling, or teletherapy—is mental health counseling provided through live video rather than in a traditional office.

You and your therapist meet at a scheduled time using a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera, microphone, and reliable internet connection. Sessions remain focused on your concerns, treatment goals, and progress just as they would during in-person counseling.

Online therapy is not a prerecorded program or automated conversation. You meet live with a mental health professional who listens, responds, asks questions, and adapts treatment to your individual needs.

Can Online Therapy Be Effective?

For many clients and mental health concerns, telehealth can provide meaningful, structured, and effective counseling.

The essential parts of therapy remain the same. You build a relationship with your therapist, discuss what you are experiencing, establish goals, learn skills, process emotions, and work toward lasting change. The primary difference is that you and your therapist connect through video instead of meeting in the same physical room.

Some clients find that they feel more comfortable speaking from a familiar environment. Others appreciate being able to attend consistently without managing travel time, transportation, or time away from work and family.

Telehealth is not the best fit for every person or situation. Your therapist will consider your symptoms, safety, privacy, age, technology access, and treatment goals when determining whether virtual counseling is appropriate.

Benefits of Online Therapy

Reduced Travel Time and Expense

Virtual appointments eliminate the time and cost associated with driving, parking, and traveling to and from a counseling office.

Convenient Access to Care

Telehealth allows you to attend counseling without driving to an office. This can make therapy easier to fit around work, school, caregiving, medical appointments, and other responsibilities.

Therapy Throughout Utah

You do not need to live near Draper or Saratoga Springs to work with an Inner Peace Counseling therapist. Virtual appointments make our services accessible to clients in communities throughout Utah.

Increased Accessibility

Online counseling may be especially helpful for clients with chronic pain, physical disabilities, limited mobility, health concerns, or transportation barriers.

Greater Consistency

Travel time, transportation difficulties, illness, weather, and changing schedules can interfere with in-person appointments. Telehealth may make it easier to maintain a consistent counseling routine.

A Familiar Environment

Some clients feel more comfortable discussing personal concerns from their own home or another familiar setting. Being in a comfortable environment may make it easier to speak openly and practice coping skills in the place where they will use them.

More Provider Options

Telehealth allows clients to consider therapists outside their immediate community. This may make it easier to find a provider whose personality, specialty, availability, and treatment approach fit the client’s needs.

What Can Telehealth Therapy Help With?

Online counseling may be appropriate for many emotional, behavioral, and relationship concerns.

Relationship Concerns

Individuals and couples can use telehealth to work on communication, conflict, emotional connection, boundaries, intimacy, and rebuilding trust.

Parenting and Family Challenges

Parents and family members can meet online to strengthen communication, address conflict, develop more effective responses to behavior, and navigate changes affecting the household.

Personal Growth

You do not need to be in crisis to attend online therapy. Telehealth can also help you better understand yourself, clarify your values, strengthen confidence, improve relationships, and make intentional changes.

Anxiety and Panic

Virtual therapy can help clients understand anxiety, identify triggers, reduce avoidance, and develop practical skills for managing worry, panic, health anxiety, social anxiety, and fear.

Depression

Counseling can support clients experiencing sadness, low motivation, isolation, irritability, emotional numbness, or loss of interest. Telehealth may make attending therapy feel more manageable when leaving home is difficult.

OCD and Intrusive Thoughts

Specialized online therapy can help clients recognize obsessive-compulsive patterns and reduce compulsive or avoidant responses. Exposure and Response Prevention may be adapted for telehealth when clinically appropriate.

Trauma and PTSD

Trauma-informed online counseling can help clients develop stability, understand trauma-related reactions, and process distressing experiences at an appropriate pace. The therapist will determine whether virtual trauma treatment is a safe and appropriate fit.

Stress and Burnout

Online therapy can help clients manage professional pressure, caregiving responsibilities, high expectations, exhaustion, and difficulty maintaining balance.

Grief and Loss

Telehealth provides a private place to process the death of a loved one, relationship loss, health changes, infertility, career disruption, or another meaningful loss.

ADHD and Emotional Regulation

Virtual counseling can help clients develop strategies for organization, motivation, impulsivity, time management, emotional intensity, and daily routines.

Life Transitions

Counseling can provide support during marriage, divorce, relocation, parenthood, career changes, retirement, health concerns, and other major adjustments.

Who Can Participate in Online Counseling?

Inner Peace Counseling of Utah offers telehealth appointments for several types of clients and services.

  • Adults - Adults can receive online individual therapy for anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, grief, stress, relationships, identity, life transitions, and personal growth.

  • Teenagers - Virtual counseling may be a good fit for teenagers who are comfortable communicating through video and have access to a private space. A parent or guardian may need to be available depending on the teenager’s age, needs, and safety plan.

  • Children - Telehealth may be appropriate for some children, particularly when a caregiver can participate and the child is able to remain engaged through video. Younger children or children who need highly interactive treatment may benefit more from in-person counseling.

Your therapist can help determine whether individual telehealth, parent-focused sessions, family therapy, or in-person treatment would be most helpful.

Couples

Couples can attend therapy online to work on communication, conflict, trust, emotional connection, intimacy, parenting, and major life decisions.

Both partners should attend from a private setting where they can speak openly. If partners plan to connect from different locations, discuss this with the therapist in advance.

Families

Family therapy and parent support can also be provided through telehealth. Virtual appointments may make it easier for several family members to participate without coordinating travel to the same office.

Veterans

Online counseling may be especially helpful for Utah veterans who live farther from an office, manage chronic pain or mobility concerns, or prefer to attend from a familiar environment.

How Is Privacy Protected?

Inner Peace Counseling of Utah uses secure technology for telehealth appointments. The same professional confidentiality standards that apply to in-person counseling also apply to virtual therapy.

Your therapist will explain confidentiality and its legal and ethical limits at the beginning of treatment.

Clients also play an important role in protecting privacy. We recommend that you:

  • Attend from a private location

  • Use a personal device whenever possible

  • Avoid public or unsecured Wi-Fi

  • Wear headphones if others are nearby

  • Keep your appointment link private

  • Prevent voice assistants or recording devices from listening

  • Do not record the session without the therapist’s knowledge and written agreement

  • Tell your therapist if someone else is present

Privacy may be difficult to protect in public places, shared offices, restaurants, schools, or other locations where conversations can be overheard.

What If I Am Traveling Outside Utah?

Telehealth rules are based in part on where the client is physically located at the time of the appointment.

If you will be outside Utah—even temporarily—tell your therapist or our scheduling team before the session. Your therapist must determine whether they are legally permitted to provide counseling while you are in that location.

Do not assume that a session can continue simply because you remain a Utah resident. Depending on your location and your therapist’s licensing authority, the appointment may need to be rescheduled until you return to Utah.

Can I Switch Between Online and In-Person Therapy?

In many situations, clients may be able to use both virtual and in-person appointments. You might regularly attend online but choose an office visit when additional privacy, technology problems, treatment needs, or personal preference make in-person care more appropriate.

Availability depends on your therapist’s schedule, office location, clinical recommendations, and insurance requirements. Discuss your preferred format with your therapist or our scheduling team.

When Might In-Person Therapy Be a Better Fit?

Telehealth is helpful for many people, but it is not appropriate for every client or situation.

In-person counseling or a different level of care may be recommended when:

  • Reliable internet or adequate privacy is not available

  • The client has difficulty remaining engaged through video

  • A child needs highly interactive or play-based treatment

  • Symptoms require closer in-person observation

  • There are significant safety concerns

  • The client is experiencing an acute psychiatric crisis

  • Substance use prevents meaningful participation

  • The home environment is unsafe or lacks privacy

  • The treatment approach cannot be provided effectively online

  • A higher level of care is needed

Your therapist will discuss these concerns with you and recommend the appointment format or level of care most appropriate for your needs.

Does Insurance Cover Telehealth Counseling?

Many insurance plans include coverage for telehealth mental health services, but benefits vary by plan, provider, diagnosis, and type of appointment.

Before beginning care, contact your insurance company or our office to verify:

  • Whether telehealth mental health services are covered

  • Whether the therapist participates with your plan

  • Your copay, deductible, or coinsurance

  • Whether authorization or a referral is required

  • Whether couples or family therapy is included

Verification of benefits is not a guarantee that an insurance company will pay a claim. Self-pay appointments may also be available.

What If I Have Technical Problems?

If you cannot connect to your appointment:

  • Confirm that you are using the correct link

  • Check your internet connection

  • Close and reopen the video window

  • Make sure your browser has permission to use the camera and microphone

  • Try another supported device if available

  • Contact our office as soon as possible

  • Message your therapist via the Client Portal

Your therapist or our administrative team will help determine whether the session can continue through an approved backup option or needs to be rescheduled.

Is Telehealth Appropriate During a Crisis?

Telehealth counseling is not an emergency or crisis-response service.

At the beginning of a virtual appointment, your therapist may confirm your physical location and emergency contact information. This helps the therapist respond appropriately if a serious safety concern develops during the session.

If you are in immediate danger, may harm yourself or another person, or cannot remain safe:

  • Call 911

  • Call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

  • Go to the nearest emergency department

Do not wait for a scheduled telehealth appointment if you need immediate help.
