Trauma and PTSD
Trauma can result from a single frightening event or from repeated experiences that leave a person feeling unsafe, powerless, or overwhelmed. Trauma is an emotional and physical response to a deeply distressing or life-threatening event that overwhelms a person's ability to cope. It may develop after an accident, abuse, violence, medical crisis, loss, a difficult relationship, or another distressing experience. What feels traumatic is different for every person.
After trauma, the brain and body may continue responding as though danger is still present—even when the event has ended. A person may experience anxiety, irritability, emotional numbness, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, avoidance, or a constant sense of being on guard.
Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, may develop when these reactions persist and begin interfering with relationships, work, school, or daily life. Symptoms can include intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, intense reactions to reminders, changes in mood, and avoidance of people, places, or situations connected to the experience.
At Inner Peace Counseling of Utah, our providers understand that trauma can affect every part of a person’s life and each person in unique ways. Our therapists offer compassionate, individualized care designed to help clients feel safe, understood, and supported throughout the healing process. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, our providers work collaboratively with each client to identify their goals, build coping skills, and determine which treatment methods may be most helpful.
Healing does not require forgetting what happened. With the support of a skilled therapist, clients can begin to understand their reactions, process painful experiences at an appropriate pace, and move toward greater confidence, connection, and emotional freedom.
Many of our providers have specialized training in trauma-focused approaches, including EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Internal Family Systems, cognitive behavioral therapies, and other evidence-based methods. Inner Peace Counseling of Utah is known for helping people work through trauma. These approaches may help reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, improve emotional regulation, and support a greater sense of safety and control.
Inner Peace Counseling of Utah offers trauma-informed counseling in Draper and Saratoga Springs, with virtual appointments available throughout Utah.
