High Performers
High performers are often skilled at pushing through pressure, solving problems, and maintaining focus. Athletes, executives, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, performers, and other driven individuals may appear confident and capable while privately struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, perfectionism, or fear of failure.
Sometimes, the obstacle is not a lack of ability, preparation, or motivation. Past experiences, painful setbacks, criticism, injuries, mistakes, or high-pressure moments can continue to influence how the brain and body respond. A person may understand logically that they are capable, yet still feel frozen, distracted, tense, or unable to perform at their usual level.
These blocks may appear as:
-
Performance anxiety or difficulty staying focused
-
Fear of failure, judgment, or disappointing others
-
Perfectionism and harsh self-criticism
-
Procrastination or avoidance before important tasks
-
Difficulty recovering after a mistake, loss, or setback
-
Feeling mentally stuck despite continued preparation
-
Physical tension, panic, or emotional overwhelm under pressure
-
Loss of confidence following an injury or difficult experience
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy, or ART, are therapeutic approaches that may help individuals process distressing experiences and reduce the emotional intensity connected to them. These therapies use structured techniques, including forms of bilateral stimulation or guided eye movements, to help the brain work through memories, beliefs, and emotional responses that may be contributing to current performance difficulties.
For a high performer, the focus is to address the present situations in which the block appears and strengthen the thoughts, emotional responses, and mental imagery associated with future performance.
EMDR or ART may be used to help individuals:
-
Process a painful failure, injury, criticism, or public mistake
-
Reduce anxiety connected to competition, presentations, or leadership
-
Challenge deeply held beliefs such as “I am not good enough” and imposter syndrome
-
Separate present performance from previous negative experiences
-
Improve confidence and emotional regulation under pressure
-
Develop a calmer and more adaptive response to future challenges
